Our work

Our team is currently working on developing a web application to facilitate a connection between schools, grocery stores, and volunteers to redistribute excess produce.

We came upon our idea after realizing that there high prevalence of hunger in our society which is paradoxically accompanied by huge amounts of food waste. One in seven American children faces food insecurity. Meanwhile, grocery stores discard 52 billion pounds of food every year, which decomposes in landfills, releasing harmful greenhouse gases. Food waste and child hunger stem from the ineffective distribution of food. We realized that a system that redistributes surplus produce to children in need will help to alleviate this issue. This led to the creation of our app, Produce Rescue.

The app allows grocery stores to post imperfect produce which are still edible (ex. bruised apple) in our store. Schools can then order the items according to their needs. Transportation and distribution of the produce to schools will be done by volunteers.

Grocery stores

Grocery stores will determine what produce will not sell but is still edible. That produce will be entered on our website where schools can see what is available.

Volunteers

Volunteers will transport the produce from the grocery stores to the schools based on the orders placed.

There will also be volunteers at the schools to distribute produce.

Schools

Schools will place orders on the website according to the needs of the students.
